A contribution towards a lesser carbon emission

Posted by admin on December 27, 2011

These days, Global warming is considered as a matter of great concern and this is something that has pulled the attention and concern of many towards energy conservation and environmental degradation. Maximum number of people today believes in adopting green measures in their house, office or building, so that they can also contribute in a green environment.

CFL bulbs and LEDs play a vital role to ensure less energy consumption as these are pollution free and safe for the environment. But an important thing to know about CFL lights is that these should be used in compact fluorescent fixtures only, as incandescent lighting fixture would reduce their life. Apart from these, there exist a few other factors also that may help you make best use of available resources so that you can protect the environment and along with this can save a lot of your money, too. First of all it is important to make proper use of windows, skylights and other ventilation methods in your house as this way you can lit your house during the day by natural sunlight. But these should be in such a way that it keeps you free from adverse heating / cooling effect of daylight.

Other than this, it is important to use energy efficient equipments that are made up with latest technologies because those with old machinery will consume more energy. Following these tips, you can save energy which will naturally reduce carbon emission.

All About Fluorescent lighting fixtures

Using energy efficient lights, you not only save energy and environment but also a lot of money and that too while decorating your house or office areas with bright lights and an aesthetic look . After considering plenty of benefits and drawbacks of various kinds of lighting sources, it has been finally discovered that in any times, these energy saving lights are more efficient as these have a longer life and consume less of energy.

When it comes to home lighting, Fluorescent lighting fixtures play a vital role. These are basically gas-discharge lamps that for exciting mercury vapor uses electricity. Further short-wave ultraviolet light rays are created by these mercury atoms which thereafter results in causing a phosphor to “fluoresce” for producing visible light. In a nut shell, the fluorescent lamps by changing electrical power into useful light, produces light in a more efficiently manner. These fluorescent light fixtures are a bit expensive but then their lower energy cost is something that is enough to offset its price.

Within these fluorescent light fixtures, ballast is necessarily required for regulating the current through the light and therefore these cost a bit expensive. But their long life and their ability to light up the space with adequate lighting without concentrating too much on one point are a few to name features that help ignore its cost easily. Just one or two of such fixtures are enough to light up the entire room. So these not only help you save money on energy but also on number of fixtures.

Advantages of energy saver lights

The expensive price tags never made energy saver lights the part of our households but today it is not just a question of cost but also our environment is at risk. Thus maximum population of people today have started overlooking the cost factor and understanding the need of today thereby making CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) and LEDs an important part of households and business places majorly. The list of advantages of these lightings over the traditional ones is a bigger one.

Some of the advantages of these lightings are as follows:

  1. Lesser Power Consumption: These energy saver lightings consume lesser power as compared to the incandescent bulbs.
  2. High Energy Efficient: Along with the lesser power consumption, these lightings are also highly energy efficient because they emit more amount of light per watt of power they use.
  3. Longer Life: As the power consumption is low and energy efficiency is higher in these lightings, these energy saver light bulbs serve with longer life as compared to the traditional bulbs. These light bulbs usually serve more than 30,000 hours.
  4. Safe and Eco-Friendly: These lightings are safe to serve the humans as well as the environment because there is no presence of any filaments like mercury and thus the possibility of burning out is definitely zero.
  5. Huge Variety available: There are many different shapes, sizes and colors that are available in these types of lightings. The design of these fluorescent lights or energy saver lights easily fixes them into the traditional light fixtures.

Build a Better Light

Posted by admin on December 6, 2011

These days a lot of emphasis is being given on energy saving lights. Researchers across the world were trying to design a source of light that could be 100% efficient and finally they landed with organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) that are potential enough for virtually 100% efficiency.

When compared with other bulbs, OLEDs are always considered as a better choice because these newly re-designed carbon-based LEDs are produced using a long-lived fluorescent material which is perfect to generate the blue light. Among the fluorescent and phosphorescent materials, the electrons were interacting in a slightly different manner and therefore the researchers brought the cathode and the blue fluorescing material closer together, so that it could catch more of the electrons prior moving through the materials. Availability of the green and red phosphors as a few nanometers into the device allows the electrons to remain excited longer. And thus OLEDs by utilizing virtually all of the electrons result in almost 100% internal efficiency.

More versatile in nature, these white OLEDs could be mounted on glass and flexible plastics, but then at the same time, these require a moisture barrier which is quite expensive. But despite of this, OLEDs with a lifetime of 10,000 hours are considered as a great source of potential energy efficiency lights.

These OLEDs are a better invention than the simple LEDs because they were not a practical solution for illumination of buildings. Those were good and efficient enough to produce bright sources of light in traffic lights, Christmas trees and as bicycle lights only.

CFLs are today’s GLS

Posted by admin on November 28, 2011

The term GLS when applied to lighting stands for General Lighting Service. Lighting in the households is so expensive that it is hard to believe that 20% of the energy in the households is consumed by lighting. With the growth in popularity of power saving bulbs, people have started opting for energy saver lights rather than the traditional incandescent bulbs because it is the easiest way to save energy, the environment as well as your hard earned income.

In easier language we can say that GLS has been given a new name i.e. energy saving lighting. Availability of these lightings in many different sizes, wattages, lumens values, bases and color temperatures has made the energy saver lightings, a perfect choice of today. One can get a warm white bulb with a 2700 Kelvin color temperature for households; on the other hand, a daylight white bulb with 6500 Kelvin color temperature is ideal for an office or a business place. The soft and warm white color of these lights is very much appealing than any other. The natural or cool white labeled light is perfect to serve the purpose for reading, exterior fixtures and task lighting whereas the warm and yellow hue will best serve your household’s living areas or accent lighting.

The above factors definitely make the low energy light bulbs somewhat expensive than the incandescent bulbs but it is another truth that these bulbs have a much longer lifespan and they also best saves energy costs of a household. Also, they are good for the environment because they don’t contain any harmful mercury.

Emergence of Energy Saving Lights

In ancient times, when there was no electricity, houses were specifically constructed in a way so that residents could make maximum use of natural lights. That was a perfect way to live a healthy and wealthy life. By having natural air and natural light throughout the day, people were far away from numerous diseases. Another good thing about ancient time was that there use to be no pollution and air-borne diseases. And the temperature was also moderate; neither too hot nor too chilly to tolerate. Therefore, open-air houses were of no harm to individuals. Besides, Natural light, no doubts, reduced a lot of load from their pocket too. But later once the electricity was invented, the houses also started constructed in a way to be packed from all direction, leaving the natural light out. Bulbs started getting used but as the population started growing, the natural resources used to manufacture this light also started falling short and so the electricity.

This necessity forced the invention of energy low power consuming electric fixtures and with this the researchers introduced the Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs and LEDs. These light sources are not only energy saving but these also render brighter and white light which is good for one’s skin. Both these electricity sources work on efficient electricity saving mechanism and cost cutting possibilities. And this is something that made CFL and LED popular, gaining good in houses. But then at the same time, we cannot deny that even today natural lights have no alternative and it is the best electricity for all housing, official and industrial lighting requirements with a low cost.

Expensive costs of the lightings in the households are really troubling many people today. Do you know that 20% of the energy in the households is consumed by lighting? Though Incandescent light bulbs are serving the maximum households today but they are notoriously inefficient in preserving any cost. Yes, it is true.

Thus to enable people save on energy costs from this unwanted burden, energy saver lights such as compact fluorescent lamps and LED lights are easily available in the market nowadays to efficiently replace the incandescent bulbs.

Energy saver lightings serve the households with 4 times better energy efficiency as compared to the others. Also, the design of these fluorescent lights easily fixes them into the traditional light fixtures. So, why to buy an incandescent lamp for your household in place of energy light bulbs that lasts much longer than the former?

Moreover, CFLs are also available in many different shapes and sizes. One can get a small 10-watt bulb for a smaller room or even a larger 30-watt bulb for a bigger space. To serve a household more smartly, LED lamps are the latest introduction to the list of energy saver lights. These energy efficient and cost effective lightings are not only good for your household but they are also good for the environment because they don’t contain any harmful mercury.

So, do you still think there any better deal for your household and our environment than the fluorescent light bulbs or LED lamps? I guess no.

CFLs or LEDs?

Posted by admin on November 9, 2011

CFLs and LEDs are both the energy saving lightings, which help us saving the energy cost to a maximum thereby reducing the cost in the electricity bills to a shocking figure. Though these energy saver lightings are far better than the Incandescent lights but they both have different features to serve the respective needs of every individual and his household. Also, there are certain Pros and Cons, which we should understand prior we get one for our household and work place. Understanding both one by one:

  1. Pros and Cons of CFLs: Compact fluorescent lights have a 10 times longer lasting as compared to the incandescent bulbs. These lightings take a bit longer to get warm and produce a colder light. When traced on the Kelvin scale, CFLs fell between 2700 and 3000 in terms of illumination. Also, mercury has been found in every bulb so in case of any broken bulb, it is better to be careful and cautious.
  2. Pros and Cons of LEDs: These lightings consume much low energy than the CFLs and also there is no mercury present in these bulbs. The absence of the filaments definitely assures no chemical hazard if in case they break. LEDs best serve task lighting and as night lamps. The cooler temperature of these lights makes them look dimmer. Also, accent lighting is perfectly served by LEDs.

Though they are expensive but spending some more bugs to save energy cost of the household and moreover the environment is definitely not a bad deal at all.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Energy Saving Bulbs

Posted by admin on October 29, 2011

It’s been years now, that more of energy saving bulbs have been available in the market and with advancing technology, these keep on improving. However, their earliest design was not so popular because it was very big, expensive and took a considerable time to reach full brightness. But now they have been improved, with a smaller size, reach full brightness in a matter of seconds or less, and are considerably cheaper as well.

Here are some benefits and drawbacks of them.

Benefits:

  • Only about one-fifth the electricity of filament lamps is used.
  • Have a long life; last for at least six times longer than filament lamps.
  • They are cool to use, so higher light outputs can be used.
  • Help save lot of money over electricity bills and reduces carbon emissions also.

Drawbacks:

  • These are quite expensive, but this cost is quickly recouped.
  • Compact fluorescents are not available in clear, only white or colored lights.
  • Most of CFLs are bigger in size as compared to conventional bulbs.
  • These cannot be used with dimmer switches.
  • Most security light manufacturers do not prefer using CFLs because it takes a little longer time to come on. But unless a couple of seconds are also important, this doesn’t create a problem.

So in a nut shell, the drawbacks of CFLs are quite minimal and have one or the other solution. Hence ignoring them, this light source is considered as the most efficient one.
